Even though the way people shop online is ever-changing, the principles of e-commerce will generally stay the same. So, if you’re venturing into the world of e-commerce, don’t underestimate how valuable a basic understanding of the landscape is.. This article will give you key information about the foundations of the e-commerce world, helping you put your best foot forward when making decisions about your online business.
What is E-Commerce?
In the simplest terms, e-commerce is the sale of goods or services online. Over the years, the e-commerce industry has thrived, with more and more people opting to do online shopping, rather than venture out into shopping malls.
E-commerce isn’t just logging on to Nike to buy your new pair of sneakers. When you buy a movie ticket online or purchase an online course, that’s e-commerce too.
It’s important to note that e-commerce doesn’t just happen on a desktop, or on websites for that matter. With marketplaces being a popular way for anyone to sell things online, (think Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, Amazon, Instagram or Yaga), mobile is one of the top traffic drivers of e-commerce. In fact, mobile e-commerce is well on its way to accounting for over half of all total online sales by the end of 2022!
E-Commerce as a thriving industry
If you’ve not indulged in the online shopping market before 2020, it’s important to know that before the pandemic, online sales were growing at close to 5% each year. Of course, in the last 2 years, existing businesses have focused on their ability to digitise operations and include an e-commerce counterpart to their business.
The growth of the e-commerce business has not only created a thriving industry for budding online retailers and entrepreneurs, but also digital financial services, web designers, online marketers and so much more.
Types of E-Commerce business models
When we speak about the various e-commerce business models, we’re talking about the 4 main types. These essentially describe the types of transactions that happen between consumers and businesses. Let’s take a look in more detail.
B2B, also known as Business-to-Business, e-commerce is when a business sells goods or services to another business. Think here of SAAS (Software As A Service) products, or bulk office furniture.
The most common type of e-commerce is the one you’ve likely been involved in yourself. Business-to-Consumer (B2C) e-commerce is when a business sells a product or service to a consumer —i.e Nike selling you those Air Jordan’s.
We briefly touched on this earlier on, but in the case of C2C (Consumer-to- consumer) e-commerce, this is typical of marketplaces where you’re selling your stuff as a consumer to another consumer.
An example of Consumer- to-business e-commerce is the thriving world of influencer marketing. Another is selling your services as a writer to a business.
E-Commerce and entrepreneurship
E-commerce is booming for many reasons, but one of the biggest is that it allows anyone to become an entrepreneur. Whether you choose to do so through a marketplace or building your own online store, entrepreneurship and e-commerce go hand in hand.
While there are many reasons to start an e-commerce business, there are some added benefits that make this marriage of business such a great opportunity. The benefits go beyond the convenience of running your business online and from home. Whether you’re selling a product or a service, e-commerce entrepreneurs (once they’ve acquired their product) can start selling on a global scale! Costs are low, earnings can happen whilst you sleep and the ability to scale is large.
Exploring E-Commerce platforms
There are a variety of platforms you can use to get your e-commerce business off the ground. It’s likely that the platform you choose will be dictated by your e-commerce business model. However, here is a list of some of the most popular platforms:
- Shopify
- BigCommerce
- WooCommerce
- Wix
- Squarespace
It can be pretty overwhelming to decide which e-commerce platform you’re going to run your business on. The best way to approach this is to know exactly what type of functionality you’re looking for in your online store.
There may not be one e-commerce platform that has everything you need, however, this is why you should also look at what integrations are available for each platform. In some cases a little customisation of the e-commerce platform is required, and in other cases you can use the platform straight “out of the box”. For example, one e-commerce platform might be better suited for selling physical goods, and another might be best if you’re selling services or purely online products.
Bottom line, do you research and choose a platform that best suits your needs and can scale with you as you grow!
Top tip: Many professionals, whether they run their own online business or work in an E-Commerce department, choose to partner with web developers or development agencies during this stage. This can help to ensure that all functional requirements are considered up-front before you start building your online store.
E-Commerce marketing
E-commerce marketing is a booming field for many professionals. The process of driving awareness to your online store is what e-commerce marketing is all about. There is an abundance of marketing strategies one can use to do this, some of which include:
- Search Engine Optimisation
- Digital Advertising
- Social Media
- Influencer Marketing
- Email Campaigns
Once you’ve built your e-commerce store and you’re ready to start finding customers, this is when marketing will become an ever-present, always-on branch of your business.
